Summer Makeup Tips!

Summer is officially here. And, it's time for new looks in makeup. While it can be a time to experiment with bold colors, Los Angles makeup artist Gayle Brewer advises going for neutral colors that will give you a fresh, sun-kissed look. Here are her suggestions:

* Pare an eggshell eye shadow such as Two Faced from Natural Eye Collection with dramatic, but not false, eye lashes. Get them using very dark mascara such as Mabeline's Great Lash Mascara. It is the darkest black I have found, it stays on longer, and it does not clump. To keep with the natural look, use brown eyeliner under the eyes. Try MAC Earthlink, it is a lighter shade that still adds depth to eyes.

* Another good MAC product for a more dramatic night time look is Rapid Black Liquid for the upper lids. It is sharp, not messy. It works like a Sharpee so there is no need to keep dipping the applicator into the liquid which can make it difficult to form thin, uniform lines.

* Go for pink shimmery cheeks, with the same color lipstick and gloss. Or, try NARS Orgasm Bronzer (Sephora) as a blush and lipstick. On cheeks, it makes skin look moist while giving it a healthy glow. And, the color is great for lips! It is very natural and its stays on longer than lipstick.

* During the summer avoid heavy foundation. It will make you look too overdone on hot, humid days. A tinted moisturizer, the same color as your skin, will even out the skin tone, while looking natural. If you need more cover, use a little bit of regular foundation, not powder (Gayle, why not powder? Please add). MAC Face and Body Beach Days looks nice or, if you need more staying power, try Laura Mercier products.

* There are several types of body bronzers that work well for achieving a sun-kissed look. Hula Bronze body makeup has good staying power. Michael Kors Body Bronzer is little darker, making it nice for legs and arms. It is a deodorant-like stick so the application is easy for days at the beach.

These products all have sunblock in them but always remember to apply sunblock first thing in the morning and reapply if you go into the water or exercise.

The following are makeup tips for the summer from makeup artist Gayle Brewer, owner of Celia Caserta, Inc., Los Angeles.

Summer is officially here. And, it's time for new looks in makeup.

Many women like bright colors for summer makeup, but I think less is more particularly for younger women and teens. I recommend that sticking to neutrals during hot summer months. Here are some makeup suggestions to achieve a fresh, sun-kissed look.

Pare an eggshell eye shadow such as Two Faced from Natural Eye Collection with dramatic, but not false, eye lashes. Get them using very dark mascara such as Maybelline's Great Lash Mascara. Wedding Day Makeup Tips for Latin

One of the most common mistakes Latina brides make when choosing their wedding day makeup style is trying to look like someone they aren%u2019t. You want to look soft and romantic, so keep the dark and dramatic look for the nightclubs. Remember the goal is not to look like a completely different person but to create the most beautiful version of yourself.

The following tips will help you enhance your natural beauty, not hide your essence.

FACE

Foundation must match your skin tone. Generally, Latina women have a darker skin tone and should select a foundation with darker base. To ensure an even application, start around the nose and mouth where there is redness then blend out to the rest of the face. To set the foundation, follow with a power.

Blush is essential for highlighting your cheekbones and achieving a healthy glow. Using two shades of blush will add depth to your look. Start with a blush that is the color of your skin when you are flushed. Apply to the apples of your cheeks following the cheekbone up to the hair line. Next, blend the deeper shade under the cheekbones. The colors you select should complement your skin tone. Brides should stick to a powder blush, as creams may smear.

Hispanic women should avoid white concealer as it enhances eye bags and stands out in photos. To better match an olive skin tone, mix white with an orange concealer or your foundation. Apply the concealer under the eyes and to problem areas.

EYES

In an effort to change their brow line, some Hispanic women may apply so much pencil in such dark colors it can look like their eyebrows are painted on. This creates a harsh, unapproachable look. For a soft, natural look, eyebrows should be the same color as your hair or a shade lighter. Always follow the natural brow line when applying pencil and don%u2019t be heavy-handed.

Eye shadow is meant to accentuate, not overpower your natural eye color. To achieve a natural look, use eye shadows in lighter shades of brown. To make eyes look larger and farther apart, apply color in the crease, starting with a darker shade at the outside of the eyes and graduating to a lighter shade as you work your way in. Apply a lighter complementary color to the eyelid.

Maximize your eyes with eyeliner, mascara, and an eyelash curler. Most Latinas do best with (color) liner and (color) mascara. Apply a thin line of eyeliner, to the lash line, from the inside of the eye, beginning where your lashes start, and work out. Next, apply the mascara and curl the lashes. To avoid raccoon eyes, wear waterproof eyeliner and mascara.

Don't wear false eye lashes on your wedding day. Keeping them on throughout the ceremony and reception requires a lot of glue, causing the eyelids to get heavy and the eyes to turn red, making you look tired. If you are determined to wear them, use the type with the adhesive already applied.

LIPS

The purpose of lip liner is to define lips, while preventing lipstick from bleeding. Lip liner should match the color of the lipstick. Lip liner that is darker than the lipstick is outdated. When applying, don%u2019t go outside the lips, simply follow the lip line.

Lipstick should closely match your natural lip color, be neutral or off-white. You will be kissing a lot of people so be sure that your liner and lipstick are long lasting. Lip gloss must be constantly reapplied so unless you want to carry it around, use it only for the ceremony and photos.

TEST IT

Whether you plan to do your own makeup or hire a makeup artist, always have trial runs before the wedding. Also, be sure to take photos of each to see how the makeup looks in pictures.

Lady Gaga: Make a Subtle Statemen

Kudos to Lady Gaga for her beauty bravery, but more often than not, she might have you saying, "WTF?" Gayle Brewer, makeup artist and founder of Celia Caserta, Inc., says, "It's hard to concentrate on Lady Gaga's face because her makeup and outfits are so outlandish that they're overwhelming." Be seen for who you really are instead of hiding behind outlandish styles.

For a signature look, Brewer advises: "Match your shadows to the accessories or to the color clothes you're wearing that day. Many women make the mistake of wearing dark shadows no matter what they're wearing, and it doesn%u2019t match the outfit, occasion, or season."

Makeup artist Gayle Brewer creates art - one client at at time

When Gayle Brewer was stationed in Iraq, makeup was hard to come by.

In that war-torn country's arid climate, keeping hydrated and safe were priorities. Looking good was not. But Brewer was creative.

"We had to create our own makeup," the 26-year-old Arcadia resident said. "We made face masks out of dirt ... it's really good for your pores. We had to do a bunch of stuff because we weren't looking like girls anymore."

Brewer ended her eight-year Army stint in December and is now focused on Celia Caserta Inc., her Pasadena-based company that offers professional makeup services. The business provides makeup applications and consultation for television, movies and print media photo shoots as well as weddings and red-carpet events.

A graduate of the MKC Beauty Academy in Los Angeles, Brewer is building a business that caters to everyone. "I am a Latina, so I tend to attract a lot of Latina clients," she said. "But we've branched out to the Asian market, too. I have a lot of tips for Latinas because I've grown up with them. They tend to make the same mistakes. The applications can be completely different. You can't put eyeliner on an oval-shaped eye the same way you would on an Asian eye."

Celia Caserta is currently based in Pasadena, but Brewer plans to expand.

"I plan to open a location in Arcadia and another one in Northridge," she said. "I'm staying busy. I even get calls to go to Mexico to do makeup work there."

Anton Caserta, Brewer's husband, serves as vice president of the business. Brewer admits the competition is fierce.

"There are so many good makeup artists," she said. "There is plenty of competition out there, but I get my business by word of mouth. If you love what you do, you'll get work."

Priscilla Noboa, 25, of Chino Hills recently had Brewer do a makeover on her.

"I heard about her through a co-worker," Noboa said. "I was told she was really good, so I went and tried it and I loved it. My face feels fresh and my eyes came out really nice."

Amber Rice, another client, said Brewer was able to work wonders.

"She came to my rescue after my skin was burned from waxing my eyebrows," Rice said. "You couldn't even tell after Gayle was done ... The burns were gone in a day."

Brewer said she loves to watch a customer's reaction after she performs a makeover.

"Some of them might have low self-esteem, but when you explain little things that can change their appearance and then give them the whole transformation ... then I feel like I've done my job."
